Our community – The Redcliffe jetty

By Michelle Wilson

Over 130 years ago, the Redcliffe Jetty was built to be the gateway to Moreton Bay. Today, in 2020, it still serves the same purpose.

Taking a stroll along the timber slats with children in tow and fishing rods in hand is a popular past time for locals and tourists alike.

And while the views of the glittering blue ocean and nearby islands are magnificent, there is also plenty to learn at the Redcliffe Jetty.

The current jetty is the second one built, after the original from 1885 fell into disrepair. The new version was opened in 1922 from a bathing pavilion that stands to this very day.

Inside this old pavilion is the region’s tourism centre where you can learn all about the sights of the Moreton Bay region.

The Redcliffe Jetty also provides the backdrop for the highly popular @redcliffejettymarkets which are held every Sunday morning, bustling with vendors, entertainers, children’s amusements and plenty of canine companions as well.

And the Jetty is also the mooring point for the popular whale-watching boat Eye Spy which is operated by @brisbanewhalewatching and offers a truly unique experience for visitors and locals.
